Dar Maalam - Halima Qassimi

Weaving

Halima Qassimi stands among the great women of Morocco’s mountains, a woman whose quiet strength, dignity, and unwavering commitment illuminate the soul of the rural world. Founding member of Refam Dar Maalma, the Moroccan Women Artisans Network, she embodies the wisdom of ancestral Morocco and the resilience of women who build nations in silence.

Born in Itzer, in the heart of the Middle Atlas, Halima transformed hardship into purpose. At only seventeen, following the passing of her father, she became responsible for her mother and five younger brothers. With extraordinary courage, she devoted seventeen years of her life in Casablanca to work and sacrifice so her brothers could study and build a future.

Returning to her native village, she carried with her not bitterness, but vision. In 2009, she created a weaving workshop that evolved into a cooperative dedicated to transmitting traditional knowledge, empowering women, and preserving Morocco’s collective memory. Through literacy programs, social engagement, and local political action, she became a catalyst for change. Her greatest achievement remains the installation of drinking water in her village, a decisive transformation that restored dignity, time, and hope to rural women.
